Media-Based Indexing

Newspapers

Newspaper indexing is very much a cross between journal indexing and database indexing. It is similar to journal indexing in that only the one title is indexed, but it has the characteristics of a database in having a range of fields. Depending on the newspaper concerned, and the type and depth of coverage required will influence the number of fields required.

Master Indexing can:

  • Provide indexing for an existing newspaper index.
  • Set up the database structure for a new newspaper index, and commence the indexing.
  • Act as a consultant to provide advice on setting up a newspaper index database in close consultation with the client, and to train the staff in newspaper indexing.

Pictorial Indexing

Pictorial indexing is just a specialist type of database indexing covering both still and moving images. Still images in the form of photos or slides are the most commonly indexed, and provide most of the challenges. Moving images are in fact a series of still images with time and (usually) sound components. Moving images in the form of film, video or DVD are usually best approached as catalogue records, and should include a short summary of the action.

Master Indexing can provide either indexing or consultancy services on the indexing of still images. Depending on the subject matter in question, use of a controlled vocabulary, like Australian Pictorial Thesaurus is highly recommended.

CD-ROM and DVD Indexing

Indexing of books or databases for CD-ROM or DVD output can be carried out in the conventional indexing manner, and then transferred across to the appropriate medium.

Web Indexing

Indexing of individual web pages or a number of pages comprising a site can be carried out. The most important aspect of web indexing is to value-add to the specific page by indexing terms, which do not appear on the page. Unlike conventional book indexing you cannot use see or see also references to refer to synonyms, so it is essential to add the additional synonyms and use hyperlinks to take the user to the appropriate page.

Master Indexing can provide web-indexing services.
